[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Oct-02 AT 03:32 AM (EST)]About 2 weeks ago I took the plunge and bought an extended warranty for my 2001 F250 4x4 LB, CC, Lariat. It is a 7yr/100K bumper to bumper with 0 deductible for $1500.00 from Warrantydirect.com
Well I finally got the actual agreement in the mail, well under exclusions and what will void the warranty are the following things: altering the exhaust system, suspension system or having larger or smaller tires.
Crap that is exactly what I'm planning to do, I am planning to put a 4" lift and 35's on next summer/fall and possibly change the exhaust system.
Now what?? I can cancel the contract within 60 days for a full refund or just not get any mods done.
Any thoughts?? Anyone use an extended warranty that had mods done to the suspension and has it been a problem. Especially those with engine or transmission troubles??
I asked that company to send me the paperwork prior to me buying a
extended warranty from them, they wouldn't so I didn't buy!
Sorry !
I can't help you with your question ! How would they know you have a lift on unless they were to ask the repairing dealer or place that does the repair.Just my thought.
I have a warrenty by net for my Car. I had a claim and it took an act of god to get them to pay. Additionally The mechanic charge me 320.00 for the repair. There is an 50 dolar deductible. "check the print" So I am thinking I get 270.00. Nope. The nice claims adjuster who wouldn't answer my calls only said the job was worth 150 minus the 50 so they sent me a check for 100.00.
I had to pay up front and ask for a refund because no shop would deal with them. The ford place only takes their warrenty and said no after market warrenties.
Here is the way I look at extended warranties, they ususally are not a good deal. Here is why. Say for the stated 7/100,000 for $1500.00. Several things wrong with that, first you get a bumper to bumper 3/36,000 warranty new so the 7/100K is really a expensive 4/64K extension, that is almost double per mile of coverage. Second you get a built in 100,000 mile extended warranty on the PSD. Third if you are babying your truck so much that you don't go over 100K in seven years not much is going to happen to it. Take your $1500 put it in the bank. If you have a <= problem later, pay it with that. If you have a big problem, one that cost for instance $3000.00, and you probably won't, then put another 1500.00 with it and pay it. Net zero
Chuck that POS warranty. If you need peace of mind, the only extended warranty worth owning would be a factory one. I doubt that it is to your advantage though cause you won't have your truck the way you want it. Use the money for mods or put it in the bank as suggested above. Keep in mind that the factory can use your mods against you as well, but cannot void the warranty on stuff unrelated to the mods.
If you have a problem with 50K miles or lower in less than five years (after 3 years and 36k miles)the factory will generally take care of it for you as good will if you ask nice and you have a well-maintained vehicle.
Thanks for all of the replies, with mods not covered and all of the advice as to can the warranty.....I'll be doing exactly that next week. Besides I can always buy a warranty later if I have a change of heart.
Now how much money do I need to add to that the original $1500.00 to get a 4 or 5" lift with 35 or 38 tires and new rims??
At what point does the lift start adversely effecting the transmission, engine etc?? Do I need to regear if I put on bigger tires etc, considering I have a V10 and 3.73 now.
Thanks for answers and sorry for having to ask so many, I'm not a mechanic, I work on deck of a Buoy Tender in Alaska.
Hey Tony,
Look further down the document. When the "great deal" ext. warranty was offered to me, I almost had it signed when I noticed the micro print stating " supercharged, turbocharged and ten and twelve cylinder engines not included in this warranty".
Have you seen a salesperson turn beet red with embarassment?
Enjoy your new truck!
Bob
We made the mistake of purchasing an aftermarket warranty with our 97 Expy. That was the worst $1200 we spent (gulp). Unless you get a lemon, these damnol Fords last longer than you will own it, so a warranty is just a way to **** away good money. I would recommend, like others have, putting that money in the bank and at the very least earning 3% on it. You will be money ahead. For that matter if you are worried about the truck, put that $$ in the bank and add $50-$100 a month into that account to cover a major something-or-another. If you don't need it, but a Yamaha Raptor or a [insert your favorite supercharger here] Supercharger.

Stay away from aftermarket warrenties. Ensure what the dealer is selling is actually an OEM backed warrenty. I bought an extended warrenty from VW (I thought, Actually Ryan Warrenty, Chicago.Il.) for my first new car a '87 Volkswagen Scirrocco 16v. The motor mount broke and caused the exhaust manifold to crush the pipe leading to the catalytic converter. $800.00 part from VW.The service manager at the dealership even went to bat for me explaining and showing the warrenty adjuster how it happen. No dice! Adjuster would not pay for the claim. $10.00 worth of asbestos tape, some bailing wire and a trade in is what it took to make me happy. lol.
