It's because it is three two barrel carbs!! Known as a Tri-power, it ran off the center carb until more go was demanded then the end carbs opened up. NEAT!! I saw one about 15 yrs ago around home for 250$,

thats a tri-power intake and carb system, it has 3 2 barrell carbs on it., to me there a pain in the but to have all three carbs working properly at the same time, my dad had a 69 pontiac 2+2 with a 389 and 3 2 barrells, and u would be lucky if they all ran good at the same time. but when it did run good you better hold on.
