Question 1974 rear-end

I have a 1974 Ford Ranger, F105 133 style side pick-up
with: Ranger package, 5100 GVW package, Trailer towing package light duty. What rear-ends did these models come with? I am attempting to change to poss rear-end perferably with limited slip option but want to keep truck as original as possible.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

FYI - Limited Slip is the industry term for Posi-Lock (GM term) and Trak-lok (Ford Term) They are all the same.

The upgrade you can make is to upgrade to an Eaton Limited slip, or ARB and Detroit full time lockers. ARB makes an air switched locker too, for when you want the traction of an open diff and the power of a locker. <I don't know what quality the ARB and Detroit lockers are> the eaton diff is used in racing 9" rears, you have a famous Ford 9" rear.

Hi,
(5) G7815 is the number of tires (5), 4 on the ground plus the spare were a matched set, and the size G7815, G78 is the tread width and sidewall height, and 15 is the wheel size 15inches.
4pr is 4 ply rating.
Not sure what "b" and "pt" are? Maybe someone else knows this.
WSW means "white sidewalls", those were popular back in the day.
"b" could mean "belted" or bias ply.

These definitely were not muddin' tires.

My dad was in the tire business and I was cheap labor for him when I was a kid, but it was fun and I learned alot about cars and trucks. I got free tires!!

Phil

If you look at the rear end thats in your truck see if it has a removable cover on the back. If it does its whats considered an 8.8 rear. If it has a removable center section that comes out of the front, its a 9 inch. If you want a reasonably easy and cheap alternative to what you have, and would like to obtain the originality, go to a junk yard and look for a 9 inch rear out of a late 70's early 80's f-150 4x4 or bronco. Most of these will come with a 3.50 gear ratio, and if you read the id tag on the rear end, in the bottom left hand corner will be the gear ratio. For example 3.50 or it might say 3L50, The L stands for limited slip. This is all you need to make your swap.

Correct, no 8.8 in these old trucks.

Post the rear axle tag numbers and we can decipher them for you.

Ratios were usually 3.50 or 3.73 for those C/S rears.

PT = Passenger Tire
B = The Traction Rating of B

I was really asking about the grammar usage of "drug" although I like the word "dug" a lot better, I played in the dirt a lot as a little kid, go figure.
