I need some help. I have a 98 explorer 5.0L that whines like a B.... at idle and louder at low to mid rpm. I have turned the steering wheel and the noise only changes because of the load on the engine not because of the pump. I can load the elec. system and change the noise, but again because of the load on the engine. Today I removed the belt and started it and had no noise, so I replaced the alternator and the belt because it was the loudest while listening through a screwdriver. I started it back up and the noise is still there. ($200 waste) I saw a couple threads of guys w/same problem but no results posted. I posted a thread about this a month ago and was told MAF, MAP, IAC, air filter but there is no noise w/belt off. Should I replace tensioner and idler pulleys (3) ? I hate throwing money away. Any help is appreciated.
Matt - how many miles do you have? I would definitely look at the idler pulleys and tensioner first. Like luckild said, see if they are loose, or worn.
mileage is 83K, maintenance is unknown, just purchased at 80K and previous owner said it has always had this noise. ( you know how that goes) . there are no driveability problems, I am just worried that it will show itself when my wife is driving it home from work at night, or it will break and damage other things.
The way I found the racket on my 3.0 was by removing the fan & fan shroud & then using a piece of garden hose like a stethoscope to find a noisy idler pulley.
