1984 f-150 i6 carbed my 84 left me stranded today i had just put gas in it and i was pulling away from a stop light i hit third gear and it coughed spit and then died i pulled over and cranked it over and it coughed now there is nothing happeningi looked under the hood but found nothing visually wrong i have a "custom air filter setup its a proto type home built and i blocked off the egr by switching the vacume line around i havent had a chance to tinker with it yet i was wondering if any one had this happen to the and what cured it
Blocking off the EGR is really a big NO NO because the computer still includes the EGR from its computational value and for air/fuel mixture.
Usually the Eprom inside the computer needs to be modified so it will disable and not monitor the EGR if you want to bypass the EGR.
Get a starting fluid and squirt a few in the carb opening and start the car and see if it starts and continue squirting to make sure that the engine would stay running until you stop feeding the starting fluid. If that is the case then you might have fuel related problem.
Fuel pressure gauge would narrow down the fuel problem.
Get a spark tester to see if you are getting consistent sparks from the ignition coil, etc..
I have had a vacuum leak before that would cause the fuel injectors to "flood" and subsequently lock-up which resulted in the no-crank situation. Holding the pedal to the floor would temporarily erase the flooded injector problem and the truck would start and run fine for a while. But, then, I thought 1985 was the first year for EFI, in which case this obviously does not apply?
