Hi everybody, I have a 94’ F-150 XLT Supercab 4x4 with a 302. I just replaced the engine after 245,000 miles of hard work. I am having a problem with my starter, I turn the key to start the truck, and the truck starts but the starter stays engaged. This problem is intermittent. I have change the starter solenoid, ignition switch (twice), the starter is less than 1 year old and I have a friend who is a lock smith pull the ignition and he said it was working good. If I turn the key off the starter keeps engaged and turning. The only way I can get it to stop is disconnect the positive battery cable. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
If the solenoid's new, is it possible the starter is just a little too close to the flywheel and it's binding up in the gear? Try lubing the shaft the pinion gear slides on and maybe lubing the gear with MoS2 grease if you can?

Edit: You're shutting the motor off and the starter's still turning the engine? Nevermind what I just said, it has to be electrical somehow?!?!
If starter solenoid comes in different part # for different trucks then you might have a wrong starter solenoid. Otherwise, your starter solenoid might be a bad one.
When you say you replaced the solenoid, do you mean the actual solenoid on the starter or the relay on the fender? Your truck should have both, and either of these could be sticking causing it to continue cranking.
SOUNDS LIKE THE SOLENOID PULL BACK SIDE IS STICKING. it should throw out turn the flywheel and pull back to rest. could be binding like the previous post mentioned.
If the Soleniod on the starter is sticking, will this also keep the circut open when the key is turned to the off position? What I mean is when I turn the key to the off position the starter keeps on cranking....??
you know BIGRON2 i had a problem once with my starter which I can't recall exactly, but was similar to yours. It happened when I swapped from manual to auto trans. I had to change starter also because of difference to flexplate than flywheel. well the other difference was that one starter was a '95 with relay on fender and the other was a '89 with everything on starter. So the wiring was totally different because of ignition and battery hook up. did you change any positions on the ignition circuit ? I would check all of that since you don't have any control on that part. seems as if your solenoid contacts stick together after power added and probably after it cools it separates. I don't know
I have been having a similar problem. The problem was that when cold the engine started fine. When warm the starter turns and turns, but no start. It will start every time with a remote starter. Anyway, I put a new starter solenoid relay (on fender) on yesterday, started it, and the starter kept running. I shut the key off and the starter kept turning. I had to pull the battery cable to get it to quit. I put the old solenoid back on for now. I'll let you know if I figure anything out.
Thanks I hope you solve this problem soon and I would appreciate any information you have in solving this. Right now though, I am driving my 02' Mustang GT Conv. and enjoying it even in the cold. I don't drive it much, it only has 7200 miles on it unlike my truck with 249,000
I'm pretty sure my problem is in my wiring, or ignition switch. I've been using a remote start button to start it when it is warm and it works every time.
