help! timing

My truck might be out of time. How can I know for sure? When I start it, it misses a few times before starting. Also, yesterday I changed the oil pan, and when I started it without the air filter it was pucking as if there was something wrong with an intake valve or something, after I put the breather on it didn<t do it anymore. I noticed that the injectors were also noicy, so is it possibly out of time?

You have nothing wrong with your timing. You have a bad lifter roller somewhere. The cam will likely be damaged as well. What happens is usually an exhaust roller sticks and does not allow the ex valve to let all the gasses out. So therefor it backs up into the intake.

Take a look at mine here:

wow! never seen that one. I have however replaced a 7.3 engine w/ a remaned one. Started her up and it was popping through the intake. Come to find that the rocker arm did not have an oil passage drill into her for the pushrod. amazing. a brand new (reman) engine!

I hear popping out the intake on about 50% of the 6.9/7.3 engines I start with the air cleaner removed. Not sure why. They only do it a few times when cold usually. I've never had to fix anything because of it.

FD69 - That's pretty intense loosing two lifters at 100K. I've pulled apart many engines with way more miles than that where the lifters looked fine. One was a 6.9 with over 300K on it.

Funny, it must be the type of application the truck was used in. Mine was idled alot and used around town. So the low oil pressure must have been the cause. Although my rocker pivots were pretty good. Who knows?

I have repaired 2 7.3's and my own 6.9 due to lifters. If you ever vist ford-trucks.com you will find this to be pretty common.

Pretty much all 6.9's and 7.3's pop out the intake when cold, but this is nothing but the lifters bleeding down overnight. Nothing to loose sleep over.
