does no thermostat = a cool engine?

i may be crazy but if you bipassed your thermostat, wouldn't that keep your engine cool all of the time?

I mean all it really does is restrict flow of coolant until it reaches a certain temperature. If it just wasn't there, wouldn't your cooling system be circulating constantly

Any thoughts? If not, just slap me and tell me to shutup

In a lot of applications the thermostat serves two functions. It allows the coolant to go to the radiator, and it also blocks a bypass port to prevent the coolant from constantly recirculating back into the engine. That is the case with the 4.0L.

coolant is going to be circulated either way, and the resistance by the thermostat isn't significant.
if you dont mind it taking forever for the engine to warm up (on those frost filled mornings) go for it. your engine should be cool with a thermostat as well as without (no difference). if there is a difference, it means you have other problems.

its good to ask questions. its how you learn. i pity those who dont and 'trust' their mechanics

Actually, your engine would probably be too cold most of the time. Engines are designed to operate at a certain temperature. Running either colder or hotter can adversely affect lots of things. If I were to run without a thermostat here and now in Chicago, my engine would probably never get above 100 degrees. Among other bad things, the oil would never get hot enough to drive off condensation causing corrosion unless I changed the oil weekly.

You are incorrect. The flow needs to be balanced, and it won't be without a thermostat.

even more so if you have a big 3 or 4 core radiator. the hot water coming from the motor will just flow to fast out of the radiator to make the water cool enough. you know what i am saying. the radiator will not be cooling sufficiently because it is big and the water is flowing to fast.
