Help oil pressure

Driving last night my oil pressure gauge fluctuated for a couple seconds then went all the way below L level and engine light came on. It drove normally the rest of the night, same runnability, no overheating or anything. The gauge now does not move and the engine light stays on. The engine has under 5000 miles on it, the oil level is perfect on the dipstick. I have to drive it a lot for work and Im just wondering, is this just the gauge or a sending unit or something, am I safe to drive it? Im getting an oil change this week and will have mechanic look then, but am gonna need it a few days before that. Is it safe to drive like this, will I hurt anything? Everything as far as running seems normal...no engine noise I can hear...no rough idle....power normal. Its a 1988 EB 351W

If there is no clicking or any sort, it's **** the sending unit. Or a short. Mine is acting up sometimes too. Reading lower then it really is.

Shortly after I had my engine replaced, the sending unit went out as well. Alot of places that replace engines, reuse the original sending unit. Normally this is no big deal, but the sending unit isn't exactly built for being installed, removed, installed..etc. They can get damaged very easily and then fail shortly after install. More than likely, it's the sending unit. Should only add about 30-40 bucks to the oil change charge.

Make sure u get the right one, they tried to sell me a 120 unit last time, found it was only like 20. I think I might buy another one though, but first I will check the wiring on mine, might just be lose. U should do the same.

Thanks for the info. WHat symptoms would I notice if it was actually low? What would happen to a new engine to cause no oil pressure during any driving ranges? I just want to make sure that is a sending unit or somethin and Im not gonna hurt it, I really need to drive it thoough.

Frankly, if you had no oil in your engine, the thing would seize. IF your running low. you would hear knocking or pinging from inside the Engine. The gauges inside the Broncos are know to act up. Im in the process now of replacing all three gauges in mine, including the oil preassure, temperature and volt. Just keep monotoring your oil level and replace the sending unit and gauge.
