OK - I've been searching for a soultion on other message boards but it seems no one has a message board for Mac's because no one likes them. I'm trying to get this PC up for some friends of mine.
Now the owner who owned it before me "accadently" password protected it and she just can't remember what it was (great). So I'm stuck at this screen with no other options except to enter password or shut down.
If this was a PC I could do anything in several minutes, but consitering this is a Mac which is built to insult your inteligence (be user friendly), but still has the capibility to lock you out.
So I would appriceate if you could give me any info, or if you know any computer fourms that I could check out I would appriceate it greatly.
The Labtop that I'm working on is a Mac Powerbook G3 and it's running Mac OS 9.1
I'm going to assume that you have clicked the change password button and it asked for the old password. Get the person to tell you what they think it is and then work from there, I don;t think there is a command prompt on a mac so you cant reroute yourself to that and then delete the password files.
the screen shot didnt work i dont think
im sure u already tried this but maybe u can sign on as admin or as guest. i know u can on some PC's but ive never tried in on a MAC. i gotta MAC also and i hate it. my pc is messed up so this is a back up and youre right...they make u feel stupid.
If you have a diskette of the system files, try and get it to boot off of that. If that gets you in, then disable the password protect or use the copy of the system files to overwrite the system that's keeping you out.
I used to have Mac's. After I got my first PC, I invented a new Olympic event: Mac Tossing! Think of something between the shot-put and the Scottish hammer throw... I stood on the tailgate of my truck at the landfill and flung 3 old Mac's into the heap! Plus an old Apple lazer printer that must have had lead shielded kryptonite inside. It weighed a ton!
Yeah, you can maybe run the computer by booting it off of a Mac OS CD. It will just run the whole system from the CD, overiding the system installed on the computer. She should have given you a copy with the laptop (An extra CD came with her original purchase). You should then be able to make a clean install of the Operating System, I think, which should overwrite everything. But you have the right idea, go to a Mac forum and people will help you there. Macaddict.com comes to mind (there ar hundreds of Mac forums, contrary to what you have found).
Not to start any wars, but this problem is hardly a reason to bash Macs. His problem is that he can't overide password protection. So, that's a bad thing? Apple should make it easy to let him overide it? What if he stole it (no offense acerockola, just making a point)?
Try booting holding the shift key.... (will turn all extension off)
then see if you can get into your system folder/prefs/ and make a copy of the system pref onto your desktop.... then throw away the system pref in the pref folder.. keeping the copy on your desktop will enable you to go back if needed...
Reboot holding the option and apple key down until you see a dialog box asking you to rebuild the desktop... hit OK
might work
That's another problem - I don't have the Mac OS cd, or any system CDs.
I tried turning extension off - and it still made me enter the system password. Thanks for the suggestion though. There has to be something for idiots who lock themselves out of their computers! If I wasn't doing this for a friend, I would of taken a torch to it.
Do you happen to have a Nortons utility disc? because I think you can boot from that as well....it should have a system folder in it...
on another note
do you have a ftp client? I could ftp a disc image os 0S9 that you could burn on your machine then boot from that, which will let you trash the multi user pref.....
