Low Range Noises

I thought I'd ask for some opinions before going to the dealership mechanics and bending over. :7 I was offroad last weekend and using 4 hi, no problems, everything worked fine. There were a few spots where I needed 4 low and bad sounds were happening.

I have the dial switch 4 wheel selector (wish I had the stick!) and auto/manual hubs. I don't trust the auto hub so I always get out and lock it in. To go in low I stopped, put it in nuetral, and flipped it to 4 low. I could hear the t-case clunk into low and it felt like it was in low when driving again. It would work fine for a bit, then I heard and felt this awful grinding noise and heavy vibrations from the t-case area. It would do this then a heavy "clunk" and work fine for a bit again. I thought it might be a blown hub at first but it works great in 4 hi, no noises at all, so I think the hubs are fine. It only does it in low range so I suspect a t-case problem.

A few times I would put it in low, hear the clunk in the case as I turned the switch, and it did not drive or feel like it was in low after.

Could it be the electric shift motor not working correctly?? Could the vibrations and noise be the chain not being fully engaged on the low gear?? My old Exploder's t-case motor went out but it just stopped working, never made these awful noises or sent the heavy vibes through the drivetrain. Has anyone had this happen or have some advice??

Truck: '99 F250 V10, Auto trans, auto t-case, auto/manual hubs, 4:30 w/ limited slip. Bone stock except for 285/75-16's.

I would first verify that the shift solenoid is getting constant uninterrupted voltage to it.
If this is the case I would try to verify that the solenoid is functioning properly at all times when activated.I don't know how you can do this other than replacing it.Although I hate to throw parts at a problem.
If both of those check out it may very well be the transfer case.

Low Range Noises

How many miles on this truck ?
Sometimes the shift motor is out of adjustment.
also as 4x4x4 said connections to the shift motor could be bad

But if you got high mileage and didn't change the fluid regularly
more than likely its internal in the t-case
they only use atf in there
Seen it happen all to much, hate electric shift.
Mines all manual
