Anybody happen to know if an earlier tailgate can be swapped (relatively easily) onto a '53-up bed? I like the looks of the Ford script better than the block style. I've seen a picture of this, but got no details. I'm assuming that if it works, it has to be a late '50-'52 'gate. My parts catalogs are kind of ambiguous on this subject.
Did a search, but found no posts on this particular topic.
Guess this isn't on the darkside....just kind of in the shadows.
HI I bought a 55 parts truck that had the tailgate from an earlier model 51 or 52. The very end of the box, just below the top has to be trimmed for the hook on the top of the tailgate, to close properly. I don't think it looked very good as the overall size is also a bit small. Another buddy of mine bought a 56 that had the tailgate from a 48 or 49 and it didn't look any better in my opinion. If you like the Ford script letters better, I would cut the out of one of these tailgates and weld the patch into the original gate. You can buy these for under $200. at various suppliers. Good luck! Ozzie.
Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering. In the one pic I have, the older 'gate appears shorter, for sure. I figured on buying a new 'gate, thought it might be easier to buy an older one rather than patch & weld on a new smoothie....
