I was sold on a Gibson but I just read an article in Off Road magazine about the Magnaflow and it got me second guessing myself. I'd be interested in hearing some debate on why one or the other is better. What does one provide that the other doesn't? Then there's a buddy of mine up the street who builds dragsters from the ground up who swears by Dynamax (Dynaflow?) Should be interesting to hear.
It really all depends on what kind of sound and performance your looking for. If you want all out sound, then Flowmaster or Magnaflow, as far as flow goes, deffinately Magnaflow. Flowmasters sound nice but have horrible flow. If you want something quiet, or "mellow", then Gibson.
Basically:
Flowmaster - (40 series) LOUD, low flow
Magnaflow - Good all around
Dynomax - Same as Magnaflow
Gibson - Quiet, good flow
I have a Magnaflow catback on my mustang and it is definately worth it. It is also stainless steel unlike other company's that make theirs out of aluminum, so it won't rust out anytime soon.
last time i checked aluminium NEVER rusts, but stainless steel sooner or later will, also aluminium disapaites heat better, but honestly i have never heard of any brand making their mufflers out of aluminium, they are made out of tin. so maybe stainless steel is better.....
I just did a full exhaust on my 300. I did a lot of looking before going with a Magnaflow cat, everyone I spoke to recomended more then one brand but Magnaflow was almost always one of them. I did not use their cat system though, I went with Dynomax Super Turbo duals because they make an out of the box system and flow rating was the same but the Dynomax was cheaper.
They don't make them out of aluminum, they're "aluminized steel" so basically i guess that means they are just coated with something to slow rust. Stainless lasts a lot longer but costs a lot more too. I have a Gibson dual sport exhaust right now and I was disappointed with it's sound. Not a lot different from stock. After about 3 years with this system it looks like it won't be long before I'll need a new one. Right now I'm considering the flowmaster force II system as a possible replacement.
My cat back sounds really good to me! When you warm up your truck it sounds nice. When you leave in the morning your not popin nails out of your neighbors paneling. I listen to my exhaust instead of the radio alot. Around town respectable and on the highway too. I'm still looking for long tube headers but cant find the right ones. If i cant find the right mid pipe config. I will probably just install the headers on the stock system and listen.
I have just purchused Magnaflow cat back and High flow cat converters. I did about six months of research and listening to various posters on various truck sites.
What I found is (my opinions only) that the Flowmasters do increase the HP/Torque but in the UPPER RPM ranges.
Gibson and Magnaflow increase the HP/Torque accross the entire RPM range.
Me, I hardly ever go above 3000 RPM so I want my power down low.... (97 F-150 4x4, 4.6L V8) where I use it the most.....
I also found that the Magnaflows are only about 5% more expensive than the Gibsons anyways.
I've had both and the Flowmaster sounded much better in my opinion but low end power was better with the Magnaflow. The Magnaflow I had sounded weak at idle but the Flow sounded like a beast.
I had a 40 series, then I tried Dynomax Bullets, love em. Put two on with a Magnaflow Y pipe, and now it sounds like an M60 machine gun going down the street, this is with no cats of course. I actually noticed a little more tourqe.
