Question Clutch replacement

Hi all, I am posting so that I my help my father. My grandfather (mom's side) gave my father his 66 ford pick-up just before he died. My dad has asked me to help him replace the clutch. I am very mechanical and have plenty of tools, but do not have any experiance with ford trucks.

Is there any tricks or tips to doing a clutch?

Is it easier to remove the engine than the transmission?

Are there any special tools, such as clutch alignment tool.?

Any links to "How To's" would be great, and recomendations on where to buy parts.

Should I get a kit or just do the disc?

It is a straight 6 with a 3 speed on the column.

I tried the search, but said it was over loaded.

First, replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and the throw out bearing. If you find that the flywheel is rough or had a blue tint to it or has spider cracks, have it turned by a machine shop. You should remove the tranny, not the engine. The 3 speed tranny is not bad to remove.
1- remove driveshaft, careful not to lose u-joint caps. Put a pan under rear of tranny so grease doesn't pour out on you or floor.
2- Put jack under rear of engine with a block of wood. Loosen and remove tranny mount bolts or nuts. Raise engine slightly.
3- Remove battery cables and then remove starter. Remove tranny to bell housing bolts. Put jack under tranny and slight unit back.
4- Disconnect clutch bar linkage. Remove bell housing. Loosen bolts equally around pressure plate and remove. Careful!, it can drop on you. Check condition of pilot bearing in flywheel.
5- You may have to loosen or drop exhaust. Check for clearance.
6- Check over flywheel for signs that I posted above.
7- re-assemble clutch, etc... If you turned flywheel, you may need longer clutch adjustment lever. !-1/2 inch play in pedal is needed.

I may have missed something, but you can get an idea from what I posted to understand what needs to be done. Use jack stands, wheels blocked, etc.... SAFETY FIRST and ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Barry but I would go ahead and take the flywheel and have it machined (no matter the condition) you can buy a cheap alignment tool from your local parts store or use a pilot shaft cut from an old transmission. Once you have the clutch and pressure plate in place with everything loose, insert the pilot shaft and tighten the pressure plate down.
