I have air shocks on my Ranger.
I have loaded the truck down 'till the mud flaps were touching the ground.
When I'm not abusing it, I let most of the air out to have a reasonable ride.

NYC driving should not be too hard on shocks. Heavy loads are a different story. Put heavy duties on the back and call it good.

Don't be so sure hreed! Some of the biggest pot holes I have ever seen have been in Manhattan!

I agree though, Heavy duty shocks should handle ranger bobs needs.

beware, i put heavy duty shocks on my last ranger and it felt like my rear axle was bolted directly to the frame. maybe you just need new shocks, not necessarily heavy duty ones.

Given your application, I tend to lean toward the air shocks. Preferably Monroe, in my opinion.

At lower pressure they ride very well for "truck" shocks, which will make your commute more tolerable, and inflated they are quite capable and dependable.

I had a set on my "________" (off brand deleted) and legitimately used them for years and never ever did they loose a bit of oil or air.

Incidentally, Monroe makes a relatively large deal about making sure you know that IF they leak all the air out for some reason, it will not damage the shock. Given all the effort they put into making sure I knew it, I thought it only fair that I passed it on to you as well .

FWIW.
