2002 Dies from starvation

When the truck is cool it seems to run OK but dies after fifteen minutes of normal driving. It won't restart unless I let it sit ten minutes or so. This continues with shorter and shorter run time.
After sitting overnight it's good for another 15 minutes.
I replaced the fuel filter with no effect. It's been changed regularly.
Right after it died in the driveway I pulled the cover on the filter and the bowl wasn't even 1/3 full.
I hate to think it but it looks like the fuel pump ($360).
I listened to the pump with a stethascope and it almost sounds like it's bubbling part of the time but the tank is full.
Help! I hate to replace the fuel pump as trial and error.
I'd think the original pump would do better than 68k miles.
It's never been run dry and the seperator only drops diesel-no water.
No codes stored but that kind of makes sense to me if it's just starving for fuel. Am I right?

Thanks to you grand wizards of the PSD world.

Help, please, it wasn't the fuel pump

Replaced the fuel pump-it's still doing it. I sure don't like spending 300 bucks and three hours under the truck-live and learn.
Is there anything like a sensor, or? that could cause this?
There're still no codes, just starvation.
I can restart it after cycling the key (pump) 3X30 seconds but it sure takes a while to get back home!

Thanks.

Jim, could you get a 5 gallon pail of Diesel and drop a fuel line into the pail from the pump?

Sounds like the screen in the tank is stopped up. I am just guessing here, but by pulling fuel from an outside source would eliminate the fuel pickup.

I just got home from the dealer getting my 2000 fixed. It was a cam sensor. Cam sensor is a common problem I guess.

My symptoms: Was driving it when it just quit. No check engine light, nothing. It wouldn't start, but if I let it get cool I would run for a few seconds.

I got it towed home, and changed the fuel fiter and it seemed to be fixed, the next morning I got 6 miles and when I restarted it, I got about 50 ft.

I called arround to find a non dealer diesel shop, with no luck, but the few people I talked to suggested the local commercial ford dealer. I called and talked to them, Explained the symtoms, and asked about the costs. It turns out they would probably get it in under warrantee, which they did. $100 deductible.

FYI the fuel pump is also under the 100k miles 5 year warrantee.

It was the CPS

Limped it up to the dealer on Saturday-they called right away this morning with the news.
I'll ask them when I pick it up, but this is probably a code that was thrown and my $150 OBDII reader didn't pick it up, do you think?
I was thinking about the twice that version of the reader but no one had one in stock locally.
Any suggestions on a code reader?
I'm thinkin about the Actron Super which is here: http://www.actron.com/cgi-bin/web_st...=4869145_65051

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks for your help.

Jim
