What is it with moviemakers and the destruction of fine, classic automobiles? Like in Bullitt, where they have the hitmen drive that '68 Charger R/T into the gas station to blow up and the '68 Mustang Fastback powerslides off the road and screws up the front end and the undercarraige. Or in The Fast and the Furious, where they destroy that nice '70 Charger 500 and let the lame little Japanese cars live! And in 2Fast 2Furious, where they destroy that sweet '70 Challenger R/T and the '69 Camaro. I just don't get it.
Yeah, it's very sad how the cars and trucks look when they go down. I HATE when I flip my F-150 in my dreams. I always wake up, look out the window to see she's still there and safe, then thank God. lol
Originally posted by Tim Halliday I've often wondered the same thing. I hope that they are destroying replicas and not the real deals.
Depends on the movie. In "Tucker: A Man And His Dream," the green Tucker they flipped at the race track was a replica that was worth as much as a real one. When they wreck what appears to be a real convertible, it's actually a 2-door hardtop that they bought for 1/10th the value of the ragtop, then they just cut the roof off. In "Bullitt," the cars were the real thing, but the movie was made in the early 70's and they were just used cars at the time. No one at that time had a clue that these cars would go on to become valuable collector vehicles.
Yeah it hurts to see movies where they destroy old muscle cars. It breaks my heart and makes me so freakin mad when they destroy old model A's, such as in Bonnie and Clyde, Last Man Standing, Verne Miller, The Untouchables.. and the list goes on and on. When they destroy muscle cars it hurts, when they destroy model A's it just down right pisses me off and makes me wanna cry. These ppl are idiots. I want a model A soo bad, and thanks to hollywood idiots i get to watch them get destroyed.
Bullitt was filmed in 68--nobody thought anything of it, since they were new cars at the time. Incidentally, the other Mustang survives to this day.
Amazingly, the flipped Charger in TF&TF survived--it would be roadworthy with a new front suspension, the unit body is intact. Mopar Muscle has a story on it this month.
2 fast 2 Furious destroyed 2 old cars--both parts cars, at best. The Challenger (a 318 car) and the Camaro (a 6-cylinder) were both so rusted they would have been crushed anyway--while there were several nice cars used (including a legit Hemi car and a legit 427 Yenko) in the movie, none suffered worse than a flat tire. The destroyed cars were so bad that they had to be reinforced so they wouldn't fall apart in the stunts.

I may be wrong but I do recall that the cars in Bullitt were brand-new, right off the lot for the movie.
The Chargers were, the Mustangs were provided by Ford.
Both Chargers were 440 R/T's. They originally were planning to use Fairlanes (Ford provided most of the other cars), but were afraid it wouldn't hold up to the chase scene. So, they went Mopar. Of course, it was obviously staged--a 440 Charger would run away from a 390 Mustang easily.
