I've been looking at a 5" exhaust system. Is a 5" exhuast system overkill? Should I just get a 4" w/4" down pipe? I plan on installing it myself. Has anyone purchase the 4" system from this site? Are you happy with it?
A good 4" system is all you need until you're in the 450hp range. The 5" would be overkill, unless you want it. After all, it's your truck, and you should do what you want. I've got a full 4" system, and if I had it to do all over again, I'd use 5". Not that I'm over 450hp, but it looks awesome. Just my $.02.
Yeah I hear ya quadzilla. I think the 5" would look cool too but for the extra money and no real increase in performance I think I'll go with the 4" system.
I too have a 4" system but like the look of 5". So what I did was right after the tail pipe levels out again after going up and over the axle I flaired it to 5". So from the outside it looks like the whole thing is 5". Kinda add's a little more mellow sound to the exhaust note too. Sorta like them 'ecco tips' on gassers.
I dont think it's worth the extra $ for 5" untill you push some seriouse ponies.
On a side note, the 5" tailpipes from a 99+ PSD dont fit on a 94-97 PSD. The rear fuel tank is in the way. But the 4" tailpipe does work.
The truck was an 02 X, bought the stainless 4" monster exhaust from banks with the power elbow. The only bad thing I ran into was that at the turbo if you change the housing out you need a 12 point 8 mm socket, and it can be a real pain in the butt to get to some of the bolts. I like the exhaust, just wish someone would have thought a few of their engineering feats thought a little better. I'll do a writeup on my thoughts once I upload the pictures to the web and the audio files.
