About two weeks ago I went and test drove a slightly used 2003 7.3 powered X. One thing I noticed was how quiet the interior was with the diesel. If I didn't know any better I could have sworn it was a 6.0. The acceleration was much better, and it shifted oh so smoothly. To be honest, I was a little surprised. My 01 X (bought new) didn't even drive like that. I know for a fact that in 2002 the 7.3 specs were 250HP and 525 Ft/Ibs of torque. But my question is: what else did they do to it? I've read about people pulling 19 and 20 mpg on the freeway at 75. If I tried to do that I'd probably end up getting about 14-15 mpg. Although I could be wrong. All the same, what did Ford and/or International do to the 7.3 In late 2001 and/or early 2002?
On the underside of my hood, Ford put a white sticker that says "Non-Cat. . . "
If you have a cat, I bet your white sticker says "Cat....".
I don't know that Ford did anything in 2003. At least, the HP and torque was not changed. Ford has continually tweaked the ECM programming. Maybe they finally got it just right in 2003?
Like I said, I know that my '03 has 20 HP and 25 ft./lbs. more torque than my '99, but my X weighs 2000 lbs. more also. No way it should feel so much faster, especially when it is quieter to boot.
It could just be me. I never timed either of them.

I just checked the sticker and it says "Non-Catalyst". So I don't think it has a cat at all. Although I'm sure that I don't have a cat, I'll take a look below my X tomorrow and make sure.
Generally, 6 speeds have cats starting in '01 (or so I have read), while slushboxes typically do not. Maybe this has something to do with the extra 25 ponies...
I haven't gotten around to doing this, but I have seen numerous posts about how much better they run without the cat. I'd just rip the whole thing out and replace the pipe and muffler, or go with a whole new system.
