Can anyone tell me what the condensor-looking thing is that is mounted near the coil on my '94 F150 5.0?
Still having the hard start trouble, still throwing money and parts at it, Ford dealer says they can't duplicate the condition and that everything checks out ok.
so far I've replaced2 sensor, coil, ignition module, all else in ignition system 15 months old with quality parts, no Wells stuff.
I would love to elaborate on my hard start trouble in the hopes that someone would recognise it as the same as they'd had and tell me what the fix was.
It started suddenly about 2 months ago:I filled up both tanks, drove about 10 miles home, the next day started fine cold, drove about 30 minutes, shut down for about 2 hours, this is when it did it the first time-turned to on-then to start as I had done for the last 15 months of ownership-and it just cranked, and cranked, and cranked, then finally started, thought first I'd gotten bad gas, so I added dry gas and gas treatment to both tanks to no avail-it would start ok when stone cold from overnight, but repeate the "hard-start" when warm, and now it does it cold or warm, sometimes it'll "almost" fire but shudder and quit, then it just cranks and cranks and cranks, like I said my Ford dealer had it for 3 weeks and ran computer scans and came up with no codes, and checked fuel pressure 9 ways to Sunday and said all checked fine, said they couldn't get it to "duplicate" the hard start that the service writer himself had wittnessed when I brought truck in originally.
I think they lost interest on my truck when they couldn't find anything to make them money, and just parked it out back, they said several techs looked at it and found nothing wrong, but my truck used to not do this, so there IS something wrong!
Thanks for any suggestions!
I would assume your truck is still under warranty. You might be right. If they can't make any money, then why bother?
Asked them for the printout of the scan when they did the computer scan while the engine was running. It should also show your VIN # for your truck to correspond to your specific truck being scanned.
I can't believe the dealership could not find any failing component since they are using the state of the art scanner which is specific for Fords.
Like anything else, it could be a bunch of things. Have the starter tested, replace the fuel pressure regulator (they can flake out), test/replace the coil, and make sure the timing belt doesn't have any slack in it. If it does, the timing will jump around and make it hard to start sometimes.
The more I think about it, the more I'm on Mantta's side. I'd start with the ignition coil.
Its not the starter, it spins very nicely trying to start the engine,I installed "Standard" brand coil, and ignition module this weekend, no help, my Ford dealer says they have no way to print out what ever is in their diagnostic equipment, I thought that was kind of weird, I also thought they had diagnostic equipment specific to Fords as well, but I'm told different there.
What exactly is the other module that I should have tested?
The other module is the located on the distributor. As for any one finding whats wrong when the truck is running good won't happen unless a code is stored and even then the code could be generated by seveal other things.
A month ago my truck just up a died and then restarted 10 minutes later. The motor would crank over and over but not start until it sat for a while. I had also had trouble with the truck stalling and still do but they couldn't find anything when they hooked it to the computer. They even drove the truck and of course it never acted up on them. $1100 dollars later and I still have an idling problem and last week the truck decided to die again and not restart. Went back an hour later and she fired right up.
I want to take it to ford and let them look at it but I am afraid they will have the same results as my last check which was done at Pep Boys. I was out of town when this happened the first time. Both times I either didn't have the tools to check it or no one else with me to turn the motor over so I could check for problems.
