Question Need some advice

I'm looking at buying a 1996 Ford Explorer Sport with 4WD and a manual transmission. This truck has 113000 miles on it, and I am wondering what kind of problems I should be looking out for, and what kind of problems I can expect in the future if I do purchase this truck.

Thanks for your help!

I have a 95 Ford Explorer with 4WD and manual transmission with about 79000 miles. I have been told that you need to replace some rubber plugs in the transmission at about 100K miles. So see if that has been done. I understand that the plugs will fail leaving no oil in your transmission. The manual transmission is made by Mazda and doesn't seem to be as durable as the automatic. The syncro in our transmission acted like it was about to fail with mild crunching when shifting to 2nd, but I replaced the fluid with a synthetic and the problem seemed to have gone away. Ours has been very reliable so far and we anticipate buying another Ford 4WD soon (most likely the Escape).

Check the blend door operation. Turn the air on and check the temperature of the air throughout all temerpature ranges. If it blows hot air even though you have the temperature set in the cold range, then you have a broken blend door and should demand them to replace it before you buy it or lower the price about $1000 b/c that's how much it costs to replace that thing. Good luck with your purchase!! It's a great truck!!
