Transmission fluid change - Help please

Sorry to have to ask a “stupid” question but the server is too busy to do a search.
I have a 97 F250 that I am changing the transmission fluid and filter on. I have successfully dropped the pan and changed the filter. The book calls for 15.7 quarts of fluid however the pan only held a couple or three quarts.
Question: Is the rest of the fluid in the transfer case and if so, do I just need to draw it out through the fill plug to change it? I strongly suspect so but I do not want to accidentally put the wrong fluid in the wrong place.
I would really appreciate any help with this.

Thank you,

John

Most of the fluid is still in the torque converter. I'm not sure if you have a drain plug on your truck. My '02 does. I brought mine in to have a fluid "transfusion" at a local shop. They remove all the old fluid, and replace with new using a machine. It cost about 90 bucks.

Yes you need to drain the Converter, Take the Little pan off on the front of the trans to see the converter. Somewhere on it there should be a small plug. If ya have an extra 3500 Bucks Go ahead and Have the transfusion done by a shop But dont Feel bad if the tranny goes out in another Few thousand miles. I would NEVER EVER have it done. To many people have lost Trannys from doing it.

disconnet the return line from the cooler at the rear of the tranny and hose clamp a piece of 5/8 clear tubing(lowes or homedepot plumbing dept) put the end of the hose in a five gallon bucket and crank up you engine, your tranny will pump out about 2/5 of the fluid and air bubbles will begin to show in the clear tubing when this happens move your shifter in each gear for five to six seconds, this will open all the valvebodys and youll get somemore fluid, stop the engine and put in an equal amout of fluid that was pumped out back into the fill tube, crank back up the motor and the new fluid will push the old fluid in a continous cycle, youll waste 2-5 quarts in this process but you have about 90 to95 percent new fluid instead of 20- 40%, some people just drop the pan and drain the torque converter forgeting that there 9-10 quarts within the valve bodys, oil cooler , and existing lines,i repeat htis process until the fluid coming out of the return is as red as the new fluid your puttin in, takes me almost two cases whenever i do my own and do it often(15000-18000-miles) are trannys have poor torque converters which cause most of the problems within the tranny
