Primed the oil pump today, but...
I turned the pump counter-clockwise by hand and after about three full revolutions I saw 75lbs. on the gage. I looked into the breather hole and saw bubbling oil coming out of the push rod.
I turned about 30-40 more times until there were no bubbles coming out of the push rod.
I hooked up the drill and started to rotate the pump with the drill. The chuck slipped right away so I really cranked on the chuck. Started again and the drill was bogging down and it felt like I was forcing the pump so I stopped to post a message and see what y'all think.
Is it normal for the pump to be relatively hard to turn? If I see oil with no bubbles start to flow and the pressure jumps to 75lbs. with one revolution turn by hand, is it safe to say that the engine is primed, ready to start? Am I even doing this right???
Thanks,
James
Yes its normal.
What you experienced, was the oil pressure building in the motor as you rotated the oil pump driveshaft. Not actually the pump itself turning hard. It was the resistance of the oil being forced through the oil holes and bearings.
And yeah a heavy duty drill is in order.
