steering joint

What is that steering peice with the rubber disc on it, and what is it called? It is on a 78 F-100 4x4. It connects the steering shaft coming down from the cab, to the steering box. I walking into the local parts store and told them a steering jiont and they gave me a funny look, so i described it, and a got the deer in headlights look. Can i just get a new rubber peice, or do i need to buy the whole new peice. How do those pins come out which are in there, just pull?

It is called a flex coupling. You can buy them aftermarket or through the dealer. You can buy just the rubber. If I remember correctly, you press the new rubber over the pins and use nuts and bolts to secure it. The pins are a safety feature in case of coupler failure. The flex coupling is essentially an isolator to reduce transmission of vibration etc. through to the wheel. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I hope this helps.
