coolant temp sensor failure

help, I have a 97 f250 5.8 l gas. the code that comes up is for the coolant temp sensor. I replaced the part but when the vehicle warms up the engine dies when coming to a stop or when changing gears from d to r. I can correct the problem teporarily by disconnecting the battery and have recently disconnected the lead for the coolent temp sensor (the problem has been occuring less and almost nonexistant since the terminal disconnection.
Is it possible that there is a computer problem , would any performance chips possibly clear this problem up? has anyone else had any similar problems?

Are you sure you changed the correct sensor? There are two coolant sensors. One is for the gauge and the other is for the computer. Have you checked for codes since changing the sensor?

yes I'm pretty sure its the right one . it has two leads coming off the sensor. and no i can't pull up the codes again until tomorrow.

also my temp guage is working in cab and recently checked fluids all is o.k.

Yep, since you changed the sensor, checking the codes again would be a good idea.

thanks for your interest guys, f.y.i. it seems to be running better with the sensor unplugged! it seems to be a computer problem but I'm just guessing.
