I would check the timing set, pour a little bit of gas down the carb and see if it fires, if it does, well you got a carb, if it still doesn't, you have ruled out the carb.

Theres another thing I would check is the pickup coil in the dist. I have had this go on me and the truck doesn't start. I'm not sure how you do a test to see if its good or not or if thats even possible. Its just a thought, I hope you can get it figured out.

Ford429cu has a great answer, those pick-up coils can cause a nightmare , been there . Just about overhauled one because of the pick-up coil

What is the pickup coil? I have sprayed starter fluid into the carb and it didn't help.

The pickup coil is that part in the distributor that the 8 vane impellor sweeps past.

It is a sensor that decides when the spark happens.

The old system had a 8 lobe cam on the distributor shaft that opened and closed the points .

With electronic ignition, this changed to a Pick up coil & 8 vane impellor

to check the timing chain for slop, take the cap off, put asocket and breaker bar on harmonic bal. move bar back & forth seeif rotor turns the same, also align timing marks up marker on "0" rotor button on#1 see how far out they are, also check what rodger cater said about modual, just some info for you

I had the same problem on a 77 I had years ago,it did not start at all.We checked everything you could possibly think of.I almost pulled the motor but it was suggested that I change the pickup coil.It started so fast it was almost scary.

Well there have been a few instances when I was driving and the engine would completely quit for a couple seconds and then keep going. Would that indicate a pickup coil going bad?

Pick-up coil in the dizzy. It could just have moisture built up in there causing it to crossfire in the dizzy.
But check for play in the chain first. The always seem to jump when you turn them off,. and never want to start again.
Though mine jumped 2 1/2 teeth and got me home 30 miles. about 30mph was all that I could get out of her though. Tore it down and it had jumped 2 teeth and was on top of the 3rd and no nylon in sight.
I fixed that puppy, she's got an Edelbrock double roller in ther now set 0 Deg.

My geuss here is the spark. I've had several vehicles from ATVs to tractors that had spark, but not ENOUGH spark to ignite the fuel.

As others have stated, the ignition module and the pick-up coil would be the first thing I'd change. The ignition modules (I'm told) are notorious for failing "once in a while" before they actually die for good. I carry a spare in my truck for that reason.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem with an old dodge, it would quit once in a while, and then keep going, and then one day it wouldn't start at all, I had gas and spark(so I thought). I replaced the pickup coil, the coil, the control box, plugs wires, damn near everything electrical. I finally gave up and let it sit all summer. The only thing I didn't replace just because it still looked good was the dizzy cap. I replaced it and the truck fired up instantly. I had put in one of those inline ignition testers that goes between the plug and the wire, and I was getting and intermittent spark, I checked it only once and saw a spark, assumed it was good, and didn't check it again until later that year, which is what prompted me to try the cap. Good luck
