Computer chip opinions?

All: I have heard that changing the computer chip can help performance and mileage. Is this true, or is it a bunch of hype designed to separate me and my money? Which brand or type is best? Is it hard to change? I know almost nothing about newer Ford truck computer systems, even though I build my own computers.
I would like to improve mileage over performance, so if this is a good idea, I would like to hear your opinions, recommendations and experiences.
Specifically, I have a '98 F-150 2x4, 4.6 V-8 with automatic overdrive.
Thanks for your input!

I'm sure you'll get a few answers in here too but if you dont get many you can try asking in the Computer Chips and Tuners forum which is a ways further down on the main forum page. Motorhaven (the parts site that helps keep this site going) sells chips and tuners. You can link to it at the right side or top of the page or through my signature.

I just got my 2 Stage Diablo Chip. I saw immediate results once I put it in. If you get a chip you should go the Diablo route for sure. www.motorhaven.com

The chip is $239 with the switch (which you should definately get)! It comes with very detailed instructions on installation of the chip. If you take your time and read the instructions it's a cinch. I was freakin' out when I had to install mine because you have to clean the computer connection really well. That's most time consuming and most important part of the process. It was very simple though. I would definately recommend getting the chip!

Click that link for details on the chip. Contact Ken at motorhaven at 770-806-1955 Toll Free for more info. He'll be the one programming the chip for you! Call him Mon - Fri. Hope this helps.

"chip can help performance and mileage"
You’ll probably find the manufacture has the engine running at the best it can for mileage.
We chip or program the computer to get better performance out of the engine but mileage is what’s sacrificed to get it.
