Well I finely couldn't ignore the leaking water pump on my 96 PSD any more. Lucky my daughter is the assistant manager of a parts house I scored a new, not reman, pump for $129. R/R went pretty easy. I sprung for the tools to get the clutch fan assembly off, $60 at NAPA. I drained the whole system I was really surprised at how clean the coolant was no crud scale rust or anything although a little watery after having to add water a couple times, plus I was getting worried about SCA levels ect. I popped one can of ford coolant supplement in at around 45000 and let it go at that, 87000 now. So I was happy to see the coolant so clean. All and all I got about $250 into the water pump change and coolant change, plus tools, a he11 of a lot better than the AROUND $800 for just the R&R of the water pump, extra if I wanted the cooling system flushed and recharged, that my good old Ford dealer quoted me. Took me around 3 ½ hours, I suspect that I could get that down to about 2 hours now that I know whats what. The Ford service manuals I picked up on DVD helped some as well.
One question that I was not able to find doing a site search, is NAPA Fleet Charge considered an extended change coolant or do I need to check SCA levels periodically? Also anyone see any problems with using 4 gallons of Fleet Charge and 3 gallons of distilled water, truck runs right where is has been as far as temp goes.
Larry,
Just a quick tip for you in the future, one I found out the hard way. Many auto parts stores like pep boys and autozone have what they call a tool rental program. You pay the full price up front for the tools, and when you return them, you get your money back, all of it. It's based on the old return the tools because they were the wrong one policy. Just a recomendation for the tools you should never need again.
Only deal here is that they wanted me to buy there pump, which was just about double what I got it for. I bought the tools and still saved money. I plan on keeping the truck long enough that I will need the tools again at some point. But I do know that parts houses have tools for rent deals.
