mixture screws

i noticed alot of gas that came out of the tail pipes while messing with my new carb. i was going to try to adjust the mixture screws, when i read the instructions that the Holley carb came with and they said to hook a meter to the vacuum line and adjust the screws till i find the highest vacuum reading, is that meter necessary? and if i use the meter and i find the highest reading and gas is still dumping out the back, what do i do?

if you have gas coming out of your exhuast and its a new carb, take it back and get another one . it wasnt done right ,if I could make a suggestion ' go to an eidlebrock, you will be happier and they are a lot less trouble. they need much less playing with to run right and once set they just run, I dont own one myself but Ive worked on both, and the hollys cant hold a candle to them .good luck, bob

Littlefoot,

Are you positive that it is indeed fuel coming out the pipe?

Many times water vapor condenses and will drip from the pipes. I don't see how an engine could run so rich that fuel saturates the exhuast and drips without flooding the engine out first. Maybe it's possable and I have just never came across it before.

Good luck,

i dont think its fuel, it just smells strong. i am in the process of taking your advise about changing carbs. its hard to find an edelbrock dealer around here. i might have to order it off the internet. i am unsure of the part# i need. the holley i have is a 600 so i am assuming i need the same. but on edelbrock.com they need to know if i have egr...i think thats right.
i think i need a 600 with electric choke.
thanks for your help

My truck does the same thing on some morning, water vapour drips out of the tail pipes for about a minute or so.

I have an edelbrock #1405 on my truck, very easy to adjust. Im in the process of getting some new metering rods and jets as it is running to rich at the moment to get through emissions.

A 1405 is a manual choked 600 CFM Edelbrock. The 1406 is an electric choke model, 600 CFM carb. The 1406 has smaller primary jets than the 1405 and a bit larger diameter metering rods to make it a bit leaner.

What engine do you have?

You can grab a used 600 off e-bay for pretty cheap usually. I'm talking, sometimes less than a $100.00. Summit or Jegs for a new one or a re-man one.
