What gives?

Since it's been cold these last few months my X has been doing some things that I find odd. For example, when it's between 40 and 50 something degrees out, I start out on the road and my X doesn't want to get out of what I think is third gear. What I'm trying to say is, when the transmission reaches between 43 and 45 mph it normally shifts and the RPMs end up below 1500. One morning I just decided to put my foot to the floor and it got to about 65 or 70 before it decided to change into 4th. Is there some sort of program that the 7.3 runs in order to warm up properly? One other thing that happens is that my X doesn't want to stop sometimes. While I'm driving at about 45-50 mph and ease on to the brake for a normall stop or to slow down, it seems as if the transmission is "stuck" in third gear and can't downshift. When that happens the RPMs jump up and it just keeps going. I then have to put some serious pressure on the brakes in order to stop. Although this rarely happens, I've had a few close calls as a result. What is wrong with my X? and What do you all suggest?

The fact that your truck won't shift out of third when cold is fairly normal for us that live in the colder climates. My torque convertor won't lock until I've driven about a mile on cold mornings. When it locks, the rpm's drop, and after that, the truck will shift into OD at 42 mph.
I'm not sure about the problem stopping, though. Hopefully someone else will chime in with a suggestion.
Good luck.

Part of the problem was that I wasn't running the Diesel Kleen winter formula. It had been 2 or 3 tankfuls since I ran some through. Things are better, but not what they could be. Any other suggestions?

Hey Toreador -

I live up here in Spring also and run a 2002 F250 7.3.

I haven't had any problems due to the temp. Maybe whatever is bothering your truck isn't due to the cold?

Do you park it inside at night?

Nope, never, I try not to ever leave it out at night. The only time it stayed out was when I changed the fluid in my diff. My X fits in my garage so I leave it there at night. But it does get real cold in there once the temp starts dropping. I called Planet Ford the other day and an advisor said that the transmission problem could be related to the fluid. (although I will call Tomball ford and get a second opinion) He said it's supposed to be changed every 30K miles. My X is not too far off from 70K so I think I'll have that bumper to bumper inspection and see if that remedies the problem. Unless you guys say otherwise.......BTW Thanks HerbertKornfeld
