OK, you all hopefully by now know my 87 Ranger 2.3 issues, this is my latest consideration.
Regarding my oil leak, and estimates by Ford dealers to replace the rear main seal (between $500-900), I've considered that I'd have to be nuts to spend that when I can get a newly rebuilt Jasper motor with 36mo/75k warranty for between $2000 and $2383 (I have to verify the casting numbers on the head tomorrow to figure which price is valid) at http://webapp.jasperengines.com/catalog/netcat7.asp
Anyway, it is a no brainer.
A few questions though.
Should I MAYBE consider putting the 2.3L turbo in, if so, how much more for the needed items will it cost (ballpark), and what specifically will I need?
If I stick with the stock 2.3, what other components should I consider doing?
$2k is a heck of a lot less than buying a new Ranger, as I've reached the point of no return dumping money into it.
And yes, the 65-85+ MPH issues still exists, not as bad, but I'll have to hope that I can address that (if I have to after the new motor), if it is indeed a harness issue, and hope that just maybe it is something else.
I'd put a 6 cyl in it instead...but it sounds like you might have a diesel. *** truck lists a turbocharger assembly for 1099.95 for the 2.3L diesel(1985-87). www.********.com
I haven't seen all the issues, but if it's only a rear main seal leaking-it's not that difficult to replace. Remember, it's an 87 and getting older (like we all are). Is the truck worth the new engine? What else is going to fail soon? You wanted opinions-here's mine. Replace the seal or get a newer Ranger. I'm not sure if you are planning to do the work yourself or hire it out, but 1 day in the garage with not too many tools you can replace the seal. Opinions are like (I won't say it here) but everybody has one. That's mine. Good luck!
The price quoted is for a Gas Fuel Injected engine, installed, complete.
I don't have the tools, lift, desire to lay on my back in the driveway (I'm 52). Those days are over for me, been there done that.
If you search the previous posts (by me) for the last 2 years, you'll get up to speed where I'm at.
I'm $11,000 into this truck, totally restored and somewhat customized, so that's why the extra $2k, as if I were to walk away and sell for a song, then by a new Ranger, it'd be much, nuch, much more. I'm there, 99%, have to go all the way.
The question still remains though, turbo or stock, and the costs, needs, issues, etc.
