speedometer is way off

Hello I have an 86 f150 stepside with a 300. here goes... When going down the road im going 30 but the speedo says im goin 20 and when im goin 55 the speedo says im goin 40. as you can tell, the speedo is waaaaaay off. I have a parts truck so i exchanged the in-dash speedo but it didn't help. would this be the cable or the little plastic gear at the end of it? i checked the gear and it looked ok but it was just a once-over. I was just wondering if any of you guys had this problem? any suggestions? thank you very much

If the spedo does not do the "Bounce" that is normal for a stripped spedo gear then the problem is most likley due to a tire or rearend swap. If it does the bounce you will want to check the gear that you looked at before but there is also a gear at the other end of the cable(where it goes into the tranny tailshaft.. if that gear is also okay then look at the gear inside the tailshaft of the tranny.. if It is stripped then I fear that you are screwed... I have been told that the only way to replace this one is to tear appart the tranny (I have this problem on my 83 plow truck)

Never been on the 1/4 strip and yes...it's a Clifford intake. To get your speedo to read right, then you'll probably have to change the little gear that goes inside the tranny.

I looked at the plastic little gear that goes into it and it looked ok. ugly truck, would I be able to see the inside gear or do I have to split the tranny? also, do you know if the inside gear is plastic or metal? thank you

With the spedo cable removed you should be able to see inside thru the mounting hole...( I could on mine anyway)..I think that the internal gear is nylon (plastic) but I am not sure...

Post the entire vin# either get it off of the door post or off of the dash tag... If you poste the entire thing you will get the entire list of info on your truck...if you only want the axle info, then just post the axle code off of the door tag
