gas tank options?
Changing your tank location should not be too hard, since many of the models from this generation of F-Series had the rear mounted fuel tank. You might consider seeking out a good donor vehicle (probably a F150) from which you can obtain pick-up & sending units as well as the mounting brackets & straps for the tank. If the tank is not rusted out you can save yourself some money by doing this.
But, if you want the greatest chance at not having problems in the near term, you might consider buying a replacement tank from one of the many suppliers that sell them. While you are at it, you might even consider upgrading to one of the several oversize aftermarket tanks, most of which are in the 35 to 45 gallon size. This would more than double your effective range. Several of these options also include the sending unit & pick-up tube and have their own mounting system that would eliminate the need for the stock mounting hardware.
I have used 2 different sources for oversize replacement tanks on my trucks and have not had any problems with either of them. If you go this route, I would recommend that you also investigate the Company's legal standing as relates to their product's compliance with applicable state & federal regulations.
Hopefully this will help you. One thing I cannot help you with, though, is filling up your new tank! I have several of my own to deal with.
