A/C - Heater trouble

97 Lariat 4x4 4.6, auto.

Anyone had a problem with their heater-a/c control? Here's the deal.

This summer I had it on vent (Panel/Floor with temp to cold) with the windows down. I noticed for a warm day the air was really cold. So I started playing.

If I turn it to Max A/C or Regular A/C, I get nice cold air, which is right.

If I turn it to Panel, I get regular, stale air, which is right.

If I turn it off, it turns off...which is right.

If I try Floor or Defrost, they work fine, too.

The only problem is when I try Panel & Floor. The A/C kicks on and I can feel the drag on the motor from the compressor working. But...I thought that the Air shouldn't be working when it was on Pane. & Floor.

Anyone seen this before?

I replaced the temperature control last winter because that failed. I'm wondering if I need to replace this selector now.

Hey grayge, my floor and panel is outside air and everything else, the compressor will kick in. I have wondered about the compressor kicking in on the other selections, but the only thing I can think, is in the winter when you have the heater on and the A/C kicks on with it, is because it's also doing a defrost to keep the windows from fogging up????? All I know is it works. Maybe there will be some more replies on this, there is alot of Ford owners out there. Good post

The only modes where the A/C doesnt come on is Floor, and Vent(AKA PANEL).

So it should NOT kick on when it's or floor OR panel....but when it's on BOTH, it should?

it does that to make sure that durring the winter when no one in their right mind would ever use the A/C for cold air..that the compressor does not sit idle and allow the oil in it to drain to the botton of the compressor...which when you cranked it up on that first warm day in spring, would then procede to ruin it. Thats why it comes on "when you least expect it"
