Protocol

I just saw this subject mentioned in another thread, and it reminded me of an old question: Who makes up all the rules about communicating on the net? I'm an engineer and have been writing in all caps for most of my adult life (from back in the "old" days, when drawings were by hand, and caps helped prevent mistakes due to penmanship, etc.)

When I first wrote a few emails, I was severely chastised for my "rudeness", even though rudeness was clearly not my intent. Miss Manners says that to criticize a person for being impolite is just as impolite. The way I've seen some people criticize others for minor infractions of questionable rules reminds me of a bunch of little kids arguing about Monopoly rules.

So, again, DOES THIS HURT YOUR EYES?

No offense, but in most chat rooms and forums, using all capital letters implies that you are YELLING at the person you are speaking to. This has been general internet protocol for as the nearly 6 years I have been on the Internet.

Just thought you'd like to know, in case no one has ever mentioned it.

Yes it does. No rudeness intended.

writing in all caps causes me to sub-conciously discount the post in a way, because it looks like a childs writing.

I have worked in engineering in the past, and while the lettering on drawings was all caps, had I written correspondence in all caps, I don't think the client would've been too impressed.

oh, and I GET TO BE THE RACE CAR, no I don't want to be the shoe or the thimble, I want to be the race car, I WANT TO BE THE RACE CAR. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA..........

yeah, welcome to the pig pen, we bicker here, but we're still friends. sometimes we all have trouble with the rules

Reading all caps gets your attention and slows down the eye. It makes your mind want to back up and reread the word. Which is why STOP signs are all caps.

Using all caps on SELECTED words in a message can be used to highlight the emphasis of the word or the meaning you're trying to communicate.

USING ALL CAPS IMPLYS TO ME THAT THE INDIVDUAL EITHER LACKS EDUCATION, IS UNFAMILIAR WITH A WORD PROCESSOR OR IS SIMPLY TOO LAZY TO WORK THEIR LITTLE FINGER ON THE SHIFT KEY. INSTEAD THEY PUT THE BURDEN ON YOU TO STRUGGLE TO COMPREHEND THEIR MESSAGE.

people who dont use capitalization or punctuation are almost as bad their sentences seem to run on forever but at least its a little easier on the eyes

mOre anNoying R the yung peeps that think its kEweL 2 rite like tHIs.

Usually I won't read a long winded message in all caps and I never reply to them. I have known a few people on message boards who are visually handicapped and need to type in all caps, just so they can see their own writing. That makes you feel a little embarassed that you take your good vision for granted. In that case, reading all caps is no inconvenience compared to what someone with impairment must live with.

To answer your original question . .

(fuzzy knows these things, trust me)

About 10 pocket protector wearing engineers. Here is their picture:
http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~randy/Co...ernet/BBN.html

Additionally, as no voice inflection is possible with type written words, punctuation, hyphenation, abbreviation, and several other types of 'nations have been pressed into service to ~imply~ voice inflection. I sure wish I could think of ONE example - but I'm stumped.

HTH

IMHO

Are these familiar? if not, *they will be*.
P.S. You should have been told politely and considerately rather than being ridiculed on your "first offense", but yes all caps is definitely considered shouting (or 8 years old)

By adding a new post, the thread will appear at the top of the forum listing (if sorted by time of last entry).

If the writer has nothing to say, then they just type "bump" to move the thread back to the top.

A poster will do this if they don't want the thread to get lost.
