4.0 temp guage?

4.0 temp guage?
On my 99 4.0 OHV, the temp guage rises to normal whane i start it, but after i go a few miles it starts heating up. It goes up tp the redline and stays about 10 seconds. Then it goes back down and stays at normal. It only does it when the engine is cold and only one time. I dont think it is a bad sensor or guage b/c the heater puts out really hot air when it says its hot.
Any suggestions?

try replacing the thermostat, it could be sticking a bit causing you to run hot intermitently. It is a cheap part, only about $10 bucks and only a 20 min job to change it out. While you're there change the temp gauge sending unit for another $10 bucks, aparently the sending units are pretty cheap and prone to failure. I just changed mine, I asked the guys on this forum for advice and many of them change thermostats, sending units with their coolant about every 2 years.

BTW the thermostat at Autozone or Advanced Auto ( I dont remember) was only $3.xx something and the seal was $2.09. The collant was more expensive than the parts! And it wasnt a 20 min job. But then again i had alot of cooling down time in there since i used flush kit and flushed the whole system while i was at it. I hooked the water hose right op to the block and let it flow til it was clear. No probs since.
