electric fan

Im looking to find out if anyone has had success with the match up of a 460 and electric fan.I have a close to stock 460. It has 650 carb, a new intake, headers, bored 40 over. It just got rebuilt and i dont want to put the stock fan back on. Would it be best to put the stock fan back on or get a aftermarket replacement or switch to an electric fan all together? Before the rebuild the motor ran some where right below 210 degrees. I was told if i went with an electric fan to get one big fan not a dual. What should i do?

Rebuilding your engine will not necessarily make it run cooler. You probably need to replace your radiator or have the old one re-cored. Make sure you run the factory shroud. For street use or heavy off-roading I'd stick witht the factory fan or buy a replacement heavy-duty fan with stainless fan-blades. Leave the electric fans for the race-track.

Just my 2 cents worth...

If you worried about power bein robbed form the engine, look at using a clutch fan. Allows the engine to rev without having to drag the fan with it. The fan will gradually catch up to the engine speed. Besides, I am with Deen, ever try to troubleshoot a over temp problem in the middle of the night without a mutilmeter? With the mechanical fan is spins or it don't. But back to the temp problem ytou have now. You may find that after the rebuild the temp will drop back down. Scale and rust were all on the inside of the castings insulation the heat form escaping. Machining the block has removed most if not all the scale. Also look at running a 160-180 thermostat. When you first start up your truck only use water. Run it up to temp after you brake in the new cam. If the engine still like to climb into the 210 range do a radiator system flush. Then run it up again. Since my rebuild, using the original stock 292 radiator with no shroud, I haven't gone above 180 sitting to bumper to bumper traffic.

You should be able to find a shroud in a junkyard

Flex-A-Lite 15" dual

I am faced with a similar problem..... I was thinking the Flex-A-Lite dual 15" fans that pull 5500cfm would keep my 460/514 cool with the stock desert cool 4 row radiator. Won't it?

Count me in with the "electric fans" crowd too. When I first did the 460 Swap on my 78, it was fine on the highway, but city traffic would cause heating problems. Switched to dual Electric fans, and no problems since. They are run off a thermostatic control which turns them on and off as needed based on radiator temp. The 429 I am building for my F250 will have 3 Elecs. 2 in a puller configuration w/thermostatic control, and 1 in a pusher configuration controlled by the A/C. One thought on the fans tho. Even tho you lose the parasitic drag of the mechanical fan, if the alt is week or they are wired cheap, you WILL have problems, when you need them least (middle of nite, heavy traffic, no shoulder) lol
