Gas vs PSD Comparison

Anyone been doing this. I am looking to trade in my 03 V-10 4x4 Crew cab for a 6.0 PSD. Has anyone done any comparisons to see how long it would take to pay for the PSD. Here is what I came up with.

Comparison

V-10 Engine = 9mpg
One 28 gallon Tank of gas will go 252miles. Cost of $1.51 per gallon at current cost would cost $42.28 to fill up.

Diesel Engine = 18mpg
One 28 gallon Tank of diesel will go 504miles. Cost of $1.79 per gallon at current cost would cost $50.12 to fill up. Typically Diesel is cheaper than gas but for some reason here in So. Cal where I live it is more expensive than even Premium gas.

Difference of the range of miles is 252 miles. So it would take 2 tanks of gas to go 504 miles with the V-10.

Savings for the Diesel for every 504 miles would be $34.44.

Cost of the Diesel engine is $4000 more than the V-10. Which I think it may be higher even but not positive.

So $4000 divided by $34.44 = 116. 116 times 2 =232 which gives you the number of tanks of Fuel you would have to use to pay for the Diesel engine. Or 59220miles to pay for the Diesel engine.

Does this sound about right. Anyone else have any better comparisons that they have done?

Your math is OK but you need to include the terminal value of the diesel motor versus the terminal value of the gas motor.

When you buy, the diesel costs 4000 extra dollars
When you sell, the diesel brings in an extra 2500 dollars
The difference is 1500 dollars

Cost per mile (gas) = 1.51/9 = 0.168 dollars/mile
Cost per mile (diesel) = 1.79/18 = 0.10 dollars/mile
Savings per mile = 0.168-0.10 = 0.07 dollars

Miles to breakeven = 1500 dollars / 0.07 dollars/mile = 21,430 miles

The extra maintenance cost in 20,000 miles would be ~$200 bucks so the real breakeven mileage is closer to 30k.

58.9 cents a liter in Edmonton, Alberta for diesel. (Someone do the math to convert this to U.S. gallons.)

At .589 cents per liter (canadian) 3.85 liters equals 1 gallons U.S.
So one gallon is $ 2.27 Can = $ 1.73 U.S.

Well just talked to the dealer. I will be staying with my 03 V-10. It would cost to much to get out of it now. I will have to try and sell to private party. Trade in is to low.

I would always go with the PSD IMO. I would just not consider buying a gas truck. Everyone's different. I don't tow a lot, but I do drive A LOT

Good luck with your V10

Talking

I just completed this same transaction. I bought a 03 CC 4x4 exactly a year ago today and sold it about 2 months ago. The gas mileage was really bad.... 190 miles to the tank and did not pull my boat much better than my Expedition. I was patient and sold the truck to a private party and only lost out on the sales tax. The dealer trade in was a joke so I waited. Xmas eve my wife bought me the same color Superduty but upgraded to the Lariet package and the 6.0 diesel. I love it!! So far I have over 200 miles on it and still have over a half a tank of fuel left! I can hardly wait to tow my boat to the river this summer! I am very happy of the demand for these trucks here in CA, it saved my butt on the re-sale. Also, it is a great time to buy new, we got $8300 in rebates and incentives on this truck!

cost of the 6.0 is 5085 list/4323invoice. But you have to have the torqueshift--1480 list/1258 invoice. total for 6.0 is 6565 list/5581 invoice.

Cost of V10 is 600list/510 invoice; auto trans is 1095/931.

Difference for 6.0 is 4870/4140.

Just recently traded my '02 V10 for '04 6.0.

I would say my V10 'averaged' 11.0 and my 6.0 is 'averaging' 15-16. Diesel is $1.439 in my area.

Didn't trade to try to break even--couldn't stand the low miles per tank when towing, and didn't want to add an aftermarket tank.

All the studies I have seen indicate a "breakeven point" of 100K miles or more.
