Door Ajar Switch
Thanks
Just went to look at my 92 XLT 2wd hatch as I seemed to remember a small push switch to the left of the latch mechanism on the body. Lo and behold, it wasn't there. Surprise of surprises, must have been thinking of my old Explorer.
Checking the Chilton's, the hatch ajar warning wiring is attached to the latch mechanism in the hatch itself. I found this information in the section related to the body and removal of the rear hatch latch assembly. Apparently there is a switch which is an integral part of the latch mechanism, but even the exploded view of the rear hatch does not indicate it. I did notice that the interior lights come on as soon as you begin to open the hatch, ie as soon as the hatch mechanism begins braking contact with the striker.
There does not seem to be any adjustment of the latch mechanism itself, so your problem is most likely related to the adjustment of the striker.
Alignment of the hatch is as follows:
"The hatch can be adjusted side-to-side and up-and-down by loosening the hinge-to-header attaching nut. Adding spacers permits in or out adjustments as required. The hatch should be adjusted for an even and parallel fit with the door opening. Tighten the nuts to 13-20 ft. lbs (17-27 Nms)
The striker assembly can be moved 1/6 in (4mm) radially (side-to-side/back and forth) as necessary. Tighten the striker to 30-40 ft. lbs (41-55 Nms)"
