need help on steering cloumn

I have a 77 ford f-100 and the steering wheel has lots of "play" in it, is there a way to adjust that, or do i have to buy a new manual steering column, thanks tye

The problem is probably not the column. Is it a 2wd? If so there is a rag joint between the column and the steering box. The fiber disk of the coupler disintigrates and falls out. Then there are 2 safety pins that work in two overlarge slots to give the safety backup. However this causes a lot of slop in the steering. The rag joint is pretty straightforward to replace and you don't have to remove the column to do it. Just move the column up a little to gain clearance.

If you have a 4x4 then there is probably a U joint instead of a rag joint. These wear too. Do a search on this forum for replacement procedures.

Also, make sure all the linkages are tight and the king pins are free to turn.

The steering box can get play in it also but replacement units are available.

The steering box has a little nut with a screw inside it. Straighten the wheels, loosen the nut and do up the screw bit by bit, while moving the steering wheel back and fourth a little bit. This will take a lot of play out of the steering. Once you are finished, tighten the nut again.

if you tighten up the steering box test drive it make sure the wheel will return to center after making a turn if it doesn't you got it too tight check tie rod ends and pitman arm for excess play wheel bearings for loosness ball joints on FWD axles
