my 78 f-150 with a 400 has a priblem. it was flooding out at high rpm and black smoke was coming out of the exaust, and it would barely run. we put a new carb on it, new plugs and plug wires. the problem was fixed. that was about a week ago. yesterday it started to put out a lot of black smoke, but still ran ok. today when i started it and it seems like it is flooding out and you have to rev it a lot to clear it out. you constantly have to do this. it is sputtering a lot but itv issn't backfiring.
i have been told that this is the power valve. what do you think. how much does a power valve cost.
What carb does it have on it? Does it have a good fuel filter? It could be a powervalve, or it could be a small piece of something in the needle and seal causing it not to completely shut off.
Also, make sure that the choke is opening and that the hot air intake is working on the stock air cleaner. In cold weather, without the heated air going into the carb, it will ice up in the air bleeds and cut off air to the idle circuit causing to act like it is flooding.
