I occasionally have an electrical problem with starting my 93 F-150 XLT. I have read other posts and believe my problem is in a bad connection with my negative terminal. I have two wires off the negative terminal. A small one to ground on the frame next to the battery and the larger that disappears under the engine. I believe this is the cable that needs to be replaced. But where the heck does it go? With the 4X4 junk down there it is hard to find where it goes and how to disconnect it.
On my 88, the negative cable went all the wat to ont of the starter mounting bolts, about 6 feet or so and, it was small diameter cable. I was having trouble with it cranking too slow and the radio would loose its memory. I replaced it with a #2 cable about 18" long and connected it to the alternator bracket and have not had any problems with it since. It seems to charge better also when under a load (lights, wipers, air and all).
My problem Rockola, is that occasionally (twice now) the truck will not start. Just a click of the relay but no spinning of the starter. All power accessories work fine, just no turnin' of the engine. I replaced the battery and the positive terminal connector the last time only to find cleaning all the connections even to the starter seemed to work to get the starter going.
My negative terminal and this big wire I speak of look corroded down in deep in the casing. So I would like to replace the cable if I can figure out how to remove the end connected under the engine without removing half of the engine. I think this cable is the problem.
So my question is where is this cable connected to? Alternator bracket? Engine mount?
