Abs?
Abs?
A few months back, I asked, in this forum, whether or not my '99 Explorer 4 door 4 x 4 had ABS. A couple of people stated unequivocally that it did. However, I must report the following:
1) When I start the truck, no ABS light comes on at all...in fact, if there's one on my instrument cluster, I have no idea where it would be, no matter what the manual says.
2) After having driven on ice and snow for the first time since I acquired the truck, I now know that it locks up tight when you step on the brakes. I've had vehicles with ABS, and I know what they feel like when they are working.
Ideas? Did I just happen to get an Explorer that didn't come standard with them, or do they all come with ABS and mine are just malfunctioning?

Disagree! ABS warning light bulb could be burn out or removed by PO just to hide ABS malfunction. Or, not sure if it correct -- the one of ABS fuses could be blown (if the fuse protects the entire diagnostics circuit).
I believe that your truck has the ABS (ECU, sensors, wiring, et cetera), but ABS is not functioning of properly.
You at least try to replace the warning light bulb (also it's wise if other warning lights are working -- Check Engine, Brake red lamps, check oil, etc). If all of these lamps don't lit at all (should lite when the key is in IGNITION position but engine is not started), it seems that warning lights cluster doesn't work, probably due to blown fuse. At first gen Explorers this fuse also protects 4x4 drive ECM, by the way.
After you get the light on, it could be possible to narrow the search for the error. It light stays on at all times, it's one set of reasons, if goes og just after hard breaking, it's the second. And so one.
Also you can visit service station, they could connect their diagnostics computer to ABS diagnostics terminal (red box under the hood). This could give possible solution to the problem.
But I am sure that 99 Ex should have ABS t all wheels.
With best regards,
Yuri
