...a crack in the transfer case case can be fixed with JB-Weld or something similar? I've got a 3/4" inch crack just below the ATF drain plug (looks like the plug was overtightened created the stress on the case).
Any tips/suggestions appreciated. Also, should i be concerned if the oil gets too low in the t/fer case when 4WD is not engaged?
Thanks all,
It won't hurt to try. If its just a stress facture from a npt (pipe thread - which is tapered) thread being overtightened.
The proper way to fix it would be to drill a whole to stop the crack from propagating and welding/brazing the crack.
If you're not planning on taking it a part to weld it (with heat) then JB weld should not hurt anything. Just mark where the crack currently is at and if it keeps moving peck drill a hole to stop it - plug hole by tapping and threading for screw size of choice -- careful about getting metal chips in transfer case.
I've heard of people soldering fractures with silver solder don't know if that would be easier...less heat than brazing.
Thanks for the input Blu! I've heard that drilling a hole to stop the crack is a good idea and will probably do that. I've also heard that using a dremel to clear out the crack would allow the JB weld to penetrate better...but i'm not so sure about that method.
Does anybody know if running low on oil in the transfer case will damage the guts when not in 4WD? Only use 4 x 4 for ski-trips and offroading in the summer.
The case has a internal oil pump like the motor in your truck. It pumps oil thru the case at all times, Not just when your in 4wd. So running it low on oil can hurt your case.
