I've been trying to get my water pump replaced on my 91 explorer. Every tool kit I've rented does not fit the nut holding the fan clutch on. The smallest wrench they had in the kit was 36mm. Any suggestions? The dealership couldn't even tell me the size so I'm a bit stuck. Any feed back would help
I don't know the size either as I've never actually used the "correct" wrenches. I know it's not correct but I use a long punch and a hammer. Before I take anything else loose, I use the punch on the edge of the fan "nut" to break it loose. I've found the fan belt being installed provides enough resistance that you don't need to hold anything. With care you won't beat the nut up much. I've had the fan off my F150 3 or 4 times for various reasons and the nut only has a couple of marks on it.
I tighten it the same way. Leaving the final tightening until the belt and almost everything else is installed.
I've used this method on a variety of Fords with success. The trick is a nice heavy punch long enough to reach in past the radiator shroud, fan, and stuff. Not the official Ford method but it works.
when i had to r&r my waterpump on my 90 ranger, i used visegrips, try that, you may have to pull the shroud, fan off to make room, use the belt or vise grips on the side of the pulley to hold it . i had v- belts& pulleys. carefull not to slip & bend or mess something up.make sure you pay attention so you can put it back together. e-manfive
