I have a 1993 ford explorer. My 'check engine' is on and FORD says the code shows I need a CAM sensor. Where is the cam sensor located and is it hard to replace.
I bought a used one and cannot find where it goes. I can see a meter on the used one I purchased and I wondered, does it require any settings?
Any ides?
I have not install the CAM sensor yet...It is found in the back side of the motor. You need to lay on the engine and you will have a very small working area to replace the sensor.
The firewall of the car leaves enough room to fit your hands.
It is important not to remove it without first knowing the steps that are required before you replace it.
There is a dealer in Pasadena Ca that will replace the senor for about $650.00. Sensor is about $360.00 and the rest is labor.
You didn't say which engine, but if it is the v-6, the camshaft position sensor is located on the rear manifold on the passenger side where the distributor would normally be. If you are just replacing the plastic sensor, it is a simple and quick change. 2 screws and an electrical plug. If you need to replace the synchronizer shaft, it takes a special alignment tool. I changed mine on a 95 Ranger 3.0 in about 20 minutes (2 beers). Total cost-Synch $125, alignment tool $35 (I will rent you mine if you need one. I doubt I will ever use it again), 2 beers $3, satisfaction of getting the check engine light to turn off-priceless!!!If you need more info let me know-glad to help if I can.
