Well I guess the title deserves some describing. I have a friend with a 83 Ranger that has the 2.0, and I said "how would you like a 5.0" She says that she wants to do the swap, so now I get ot spend a few more weeks working on that. The really great part was finding a 302 on Ebay. The guy only wanted $50 for the complete running motor and tranny. I thought it was a good deal, so I bid, and had to drive 250 miles to get it. At first I thought it would just be easier to get a crate motor, but they tend to be throw togethers and aren't very dependable. She wanted to rebuild it, so I started getting stuff. I finally got around to actually looking at the motor, noting that it had funny looking valve covers for a 302 and an odd number of valve cover bolts. Turns out I have a 302 Boss. What I really want to know is: what is the value of this motor, how rare is it, and what kind of power does it make. I have a book on 302s but it doesn't give hardly any info on the boss.
The Boss 302 was a 4 bolt main, screw in freeze plug block, with a forged steel crank, forged pistons ( pop ups) solid lifter cam, screw in studs and guide plates on what are basically 351C 4 bbl heads with altered coolant outlets ( they exit the intake face instead of the deck surface as on a Cleveland) the intake was a high rise dual plane aluminum one topped by a 780 Holley. rated HP was 290 , actual was somewhere near 400.
If you have a complete boss 302 motor then it's worth far more than $50. I am not a boss expert but I am a mustang nut and I see the boss motors bringing some good $$$. If you have a complete true boss motor then you may get enough from it to pay for the build up of a stock 302 motor.
You will be asked by several people for the block number. If this block carries the correct number for a certain boss car then it could bring more $$$. Most likely you will have a service block which will drop the value a tad. The boss motors also have 3/8 rod bolts.
I would list it back on ebay once you confirm what you have. If you where closer to me I would be interested in it.
