half full shows empty

hey yall,
I have a 85 f150 with dual tanks and ever since i have owned the truck the fuel gauge slowly drops to empty when there is still about half a tank of gas. This happens on both tanks. does anybody know if there is a simple solution to this problem. i have replaced the fuel gauge with one from the local junk yard and it behaved the same way. any suggestions would be welcomed.
thanks.
earl.

Probably the sender. If you've got EFI, the sender is attached to the in-tank pump. I had this same problem in an '86 Bronco.

Check for a soldered connection in the wiring near the front tank. It will have 2 wires soldered to 1 wire and it is connected to the sending unit. My truck acted the same way, even with a new sending unit so I inspected the wiring and found a very corroded connection.
