anyone ever tried putting a ram air system on an FE, i got a ram air air cleaner and air ducts off a camaro in the junkyard today, to see if it would fit i took my dads stock filter off his 360 and set this on there and it fit and the air ducts run right up to the grill, so nayway i figured i could make it work but my question is, is it worth the hassle? Does it help nay or is it a waste of times besides it looking cool, thanks
i got it for nothing i dont know if it helps much but i was thinking about getting a ram air hood scoop for looks great and people say it helps, i dont know mucj about ram air systems but hey for nothing it always makes a nice looking engine look better.
A guy on another forum swears by it. He gained a few tenths. I thought he gained a half but he did some other stuff as well. Think about how hot it gets under your hood. All that cold air will help. I plan on getting one oneday. There are other things I want to do first. Check out www.ramairbox.com
that site was pretty cool the ram air system i found in the junkyard was similar i have all the stuff to fabricate it on, i think i will give it a try once my trucks running, guess it cant hurt anything.
The ram air setup will pretty much act as only a cold air intake system on these old trucks, which will help.
My understanding is that you really don't see a "Ram effect" until you are approaching 3 digit numbers for vehicle speed.
I wouldn't run them by the radiator, because you'd be getting some heat also
Im going to run mine where the headlights go if I ever make it a full blown race truck
Just get some plexiglass and make fake lights, and have houses there
But Im also thinking about cutitng a whole in the inner fenders
Or run them down, and up to the front of the bumper
im not sure where im going to run mine i see a lot of cars run them across the top of the radiator but that dont quite work for our trucks very good ill have to take a look at it tomorrow, im going to get some flexible tubing to do it.
I've done the ram air; check my gallery. There's just enough room for 4" holes next to the radiator; you'll probably have to move your voltage regulator a little bit. If you go with RamAir's setup, get the 3" tall air box; it just barely clears the firewall lip sitting on top of a Performer RPM manifold with drop-base air cleaner. The hardest part of the install was cutting the holes in the sheetmetal; you need a 4 1/8" hole saw and a very strong drill (and super strong wrists!).
