I just got a 78 bronco from my brother
it's been in his back yard for 6 or 7 years
now. I towed it home gave it a tune up
and oil change. After getting the fuel tank
cleaned out and the carb primed it fired right
up I drove it around for about 30 minutes
it runs good no knocks or anything but it does'nt
have much power. I did a compression check and found
all cylinders between 148 & 151. Can anyone tell me if
the compression is ok or what compression was when it
was new. I'm trying to decide if I need to rebuild.
Any help is appreciated.
That's perfectly acceptable compression, and amazing that all the cylinders are so close after sitting for so long.
351Ms don't have neck snapping power to begin with. However, there could have been a pre-existing condition causing it - bad carb, timing off, emissions stuff gone bad, etc.
Check for vacuum leaks and wrongly connected vacuum lines, etc.
Good call man
I pulled the timing cover off and found
about 1/2 inch of play in the chain.
I don't know how it stayed on it was
only riding on one side of the lower gear.
Thanks for the tip.
Since you've gotta replace it anyway, go ahead and put a double roller timing set in, set it straight up, and enjoy the newfound performance and, hopefully, MPG.
